If there’s one piece I’m adding to my wardrobe before summer officially turns into fall, it’s micro shorts. I know they can feel like a very summer-specific trend, but hear me out: they’re actually one of the easiest pieces to wear during that weird in-between season when it’s still 85 degrees during the day but suddenly feels like fall after 7 p.m.
Instead of packing away all of your summer clothes the second September hits, micro shorts give you a way to keep wearing them while adding in those cozier fall pieces you’ve been waiting all year to pull back out.
Here are five reasons you need a pair for the summer-to-fall transition.
1. It’s Still Warm Enough for Shorts

Let’s be honest: early fall does not necessarily mean fall weather. Depending on where you live, September can still be very warm during the day, which makes reaching for jeans or full-length pants feel impossible.
Micro shorts are perfect because you can wear them with your favorite summer tanks and tees during the day, then throw on a cardigan, oversized sweater or light jacket when temperatures start dropping at night.
One of my favorite transitional combinations is micro shorts + a simple tank + an oversized cardigan. It gives you that cozy fall feeling without completely overheating.
2. You’ll Wear Them Again Next Spring and Summer
One of the best things about buying a trendy summer piece toward the end of the season is that you’re not necessarily buying something you’ll only wear for a few weeks.
Micro shorts are easy to transition straight back into your spring and summer wardrobe. Once warm weather comes around again, you can style them with everything from baby tees and tanks to bikinis, oversized button-downs and cute going-out tops.
Basically, you’re getting more than one season out of them — which makes them a little easier to justify if you’re trying to be smart about your wardrobe spending.
3. They Look So Good With Fall Boots

This might be my favorite reason to own micro shorts in the first place.
Pairing tiny shorts with chunky fall boots or Y2K-inspired riding boots instantly makes the outfit feel more seasonal (with lace socks!). Add an oversized sweater, cardigan or leather jacket and suddenly your micro shorts don’t look like something you forgot to put away with your summer clothes.

The contrast between the shorter shorts and a heavier boot is also such a cute way to balance out an outfit. You get the fun, barely-there summer silhouette while still incorporating those chunkier fall textures.
4. They’re Usually Affordable to Buy New

If you want to try the trend without spending a ton of money, micro shorts are a pretty easy place to start.

You can find affordable versions at plenty of fast-fashion and mainstream retailers, so you don’t necessarily need to invest in a designer pair to get the look. And because they’re such a small piece of fabric (lol), they’re often less expensive than buying a new pair of jeans or trousers.
That makes them a good trend piece to experiment with — especially if you aren’t sure yet whether micro shorts are going to become a permanent part of your wardrobe.
5. They Make Transitional Outfits Way More Fun
There’s something about the summer-to-fall transition that can make getting dressed feel a little boring. You’re not quite ready for sweaters and jeans, but wearing a sundress and sandals can start to feel a little too summery.
Micro shorts are the perfect middle ground.
You can keep your legs out while incorporating fall colors, chunky shoes, oversized layers and cozy textures. Think brown or burgundy micro shorts with a cream cardigan, denim shorts with riding boots, or black micro shorts with a chunky sweater and loafers.
Basically, they let you start playing with your fall wardrobe before it’s actually cold enough to wear the whole thing.
And honestly, that’s exactly why I think micro shorts deserve a spot in your summer-to-fall wardrobe rotation. They’re comfortable enough for those lingering summer temperatures but versatile enough to make your outfits feel a little more fall without committing to full-on sweater weather.
