The Deodorants I’ve Tried—and the Ones I Actually Recommend

Shopping for deodorant can feel surprisingly complicated. One month you find a formula that works perfectly, and a few months later it suddenly stops doing its job. If you’ve ever wondered why your deodorant randomly quits on you, you’re definitely not alone.

After testing what feels like every deodorant and antiperspirant on the market, I decided to share my honest reviews. Everyone’s body chemistry is different, so what didn’t work for me might be your holy grail—and vice versa. But if you’re searching for a deodorant that actually controls odor and sweat, this breakdown might save you some trial and error.

Before we get into the reviews, I want to mention something important: sometimes the issue isn’t your deodorant at all.

I realized this after buying a few ultra-cheap clothing basics. Some synthetic fabrics—especially inexpensive polyester blends—can trap odor even when your underarms aren’t particularly sweaty. A few $3 henley shirts I bought from SHEIN were holding onto smell throughout the day, making it seem like my deodorant had completely failed.

Once sweat mixes with certain fabrics, odor can cling to the material itself rather than your skin. So if your deodorant suddenly “stops working,” it might be worth checking what your clothes are made of.

Now, onto the deodorant and antiperspirant reviews.

Native Deodorant — ⭐ 1/5

I committed to the aluminum-free deodorant detox trend and avoided antiperspirants for weeks. Unfortunately, the moment I experienced even mild stress or heat, this deodorant completely gave up.

If you’re lounging around in cool weather, it might hold up fine. But the second temperatures rise—or anxiety kicks in—it stopped controlling odor entirely. Personally, I ended up smelling like onions within hours.

For me, this natural deodorant just didn’t provide enough protection for real-life situations.

Donna Karan Cashmere Mist Deodorant — ⭐ 3/5

This deodorant is confusing because it smells both amazing and terrible depending on body chemistry.

It has a soft, powdery scent that many people love, but powder fragrances don’t mix well with my natural scent—especially in Texas heat. If powdery perfumes usually work for you, you might love this luxury option. Otherwise, it’s probably not worth the higher price tag.

Dry Idea Antiperspirant — ⭐ 4.5/5

Dry Idea is that girl.

I first discovered it at H-E-B in college because it was incredibly affordable, and it’s remained one of the most reliable antiperspirants I’ve ever used. It’s unscented, effective in hot weather, and consistently controls sweat without competing with perfume or body spray.

Honestly, unscented deodorant is underrated. If you want dependable odor protection without fragrance conflicts, this one deserves a permanent spot in your routine.

Secret Gel Deodorant (Rose) — ⭐ 3/5

I rotate between this gel deodorant and Dry Idea fairly often. The rose scent is nice, and I’ve also tried coconut and lavender versions that perform similarly.

The downside? I occasionally get irritation or a rash, especially after shaving frequently. If you have sensitive skin, this is something to keep in mind.

Secret Solid Deodorant — ⭐ 3/5

Solid deodorants just don’t survive intense heat for me. During summer, the formula tends to melt or slide off, and reapplying later usually leaves buildup that looks cakey and uncomfortable.

This might work well in cooler months, but I wouldn’t rely on it during hot or humid weather.

Secret Clinical Strength Gel — ⭐ 4/5

If heavy sweating is your main concern, this clinical-strength antiperspirant works extremely well. I’ve never experienced irritation with this formula, and it provides noticeably stronger sweat protection than standard deodorants.

My only complaint is the price—but performance-wise, it delivers.

Degree Women’s Deodorant — ⭐ 2/5

Degree worked fine when I first started wearing deodorant as a tween, but it no longer works well with my body chemistry. The scent just doesn’t pair well with me anymore.

At this point, I’d honestly try a men’s deodorant formula before repurchasing one of the women’s versions.

Final Thoughts

Finding the best deodorant often comes down to body chemistry, climate, and even clothing fabric. What works during winter may completely fail during summer, and sometimes rotating products is the best solution.

If you’re struggling with odor or sweat, don’t automatically assume your deodorant is the problem—your fabrics, stress levels, or fragrance preferences could be playing a bigger role than you think.
