I’m short, which means I constantly face a unique set of challenges—like struggling to reach items on high shelves, adjusting the seat every time I drive a mid-size SUV, and, perhaps most frustrating of all, trying to find jeans that actually fit. If you’re under 5’3”, you probably know the struggle of jeans that bunch at the ankles, gaps at the waist, or just never quite hit right in all the right places.
Over the years, I’ve tested a bunch of different brands in search of that perfect fit. Based on my own personal experience—and backed by tons of rave reviews online—here are four brands that consistently deliver great jeans for petite women.
1. Banana Republic

A few weeks before graduating college, I had a job interview and realized I didn’t own a single pair of slacks that fit properly. I checked out Express, Old Navy, and finally landed at Banana Republic. That’s where I found a pair of petite ankle pants that were perfect for the occasion—slim, stylish, and, as someone under 5 feet tall with a size 0 waist, they didn’t even need tailoring. If you’re tall, you’ll probably love their slacks too, but for the short girlies, Banana Republic is definitely a go-to. Yes, they’re a bit pricey, but the quality is worth it. If you can, try to shop during one of their Friends & Family sales for a better deal.
Also, I got the job offer, so I consider Banana Republic clothes my lucky interview fit!
2. American Eagle
I started wearing AE shorts back in 6th grade—partly because they were super trendy at the time, but also because American Eagle has a solid selection of petite-friendly pieces for us short girls. When I shop anything labeled “short,” I never have to worry about getting pants tailored. They run sales often, and as long as you avoid washing them in hot water, their clothes hold up really well over time. Also, if you’ve ever shopped their in-store clearance rack, you know the deals can be amazing—shorts, jeans, and more sometimes starting at just $10!
3. Madewell

My sister is also petite, and she always looks amazing in her jeans—they never bunch up or look too long on her. She swears by this brand and doesn’t mind spending a little extra on their jeans at Nordstrom. They’re definitely pricier than what you’d find at places like American Eagle, but the fit and quality make them worth the investment.
4. GAP

The GAP commercial featuring KATSEYE lives in my head rent-free—the choreography is incredible, and honestly, so are the jeans. I’ve never personally bought jeans from GAP, but after trying Banana Republic (since they’re sister brands under the same company), I’m not surprised by the hype. The quality and fit seem to be on par. If you’re curious, check out this review—it might just convince you to give GAP denim a try.
